Tony Judt
Tony Judt, whose essays I much admire, passed away today. He was suffering from a severe neorological disorder that incapacitated his speech abilities; writing was increasingly difficult too. He wrote a touching and observant piece called 'Words' on th eloss of language at all levels. Read more for the complete link

Surveys, abstracts and utopias
Lots of different chores are keeping us busy- ranging form translating survey questions for reserach to correcting abstracts and editing a large manuscript on utopia as a literary genre. Meanwhile, the Academic Writing courses for the Rotterdam Erasmus University are keeping us alert.

Rosa Manus, an important but neglected first wave feminist in the Netherlands
Today you'd call her a committed people facilitator, but in her own time Rosa Manus was known as a hard working committee member for the national and international movements devoted to "the Cause": women's suffrage. A biographical sketch on Manus dating from the 1930s was recently translated by Lighthouse Texts. This was both stimulating and interesting....
